Return of the Pelicans
During their annual migration to the Gulf coasts of Florida and Texas, every year for the past 5 years, Chesnut Bay Resort has been fortunate to have these magnificent birds come to visit. Beginning in October and lasting even into January, the pelicans arrive in flocks of 25 to 100 and stay from 1 to 3 weeks at a time. This year we have had as many as as 200-300 birds in the area at one time. They are usually surrounded by flocks of seagulls, and at approx 30 lbs, the pelicans look huge next to the seagulls. The American White Pelican is one of only two species of pelican in North America and is one of world’s largest birds. They are magnificent in flight, and beautiful as the peacefully float around the lake feeding on shad.
The birds last year stopped back in on their way home form the coast during the month of March. Come and see these fantastic birds up close and personal at Chesnut Bay Resort.
